This was done in conjunction with EDM 2018 at The University at Buffalo, New York, United States. The objective of the workshop was to facilitate a discussion among our research community around Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Computer Science Education.

Prometheus at the Microsoft Imagine Cup 2018 US Finals!

Recently, I teamed up with two friends (one is an Argentinian Fulbrighter) and submitted a project to Microsoft 2018 Imagine’s Cup. We developed, Prometheus, a Fire Detection software powered by AI. We combine surveillance drone capabilities with concepts of Deep Learning to create software that detects early-stage wildfires.

Fulbright Enrichment Seminar 2018

One of the best experiences of my time in the US has been attending the Fulbright Enrichment seminar in Philadelphia around Big Data for the Public Good. Philadelphia is an iconic city where you can visit the Liberty Bell or the Independence Hall where the Declaration of Independence and Constitution were signed.

In March 2018, I attended the 8th. International Conference on Learning Analytics & Knowledge in Sydney, Australia. I presented a joint workshop paper with Dr.Sharon Hsiao, Assistant Professor at ASU’s School of Computing, and that extended paper has been accepted to International Journal of Artificial Intelligence in Education (ijAIED). It was a great experience where I met incredible researchers doing really impressive work in a great environment.

Amazon ReInvent 2017!

I attended 2017 Amazon’s ReInvent Conference in Las Vegas. My advisor at Arizona State University, John Rome, presented how ASU is working with Amazon to create the first voice-enabled campus. Read more details here. The voice-enabled devices becoming more prevalent in our connected world, it only makes sense to bring these capabilities to a university campus.

Making the move From Industry to Academia

I was set for a career working in the IT industry with a good, secure position in IBM Ireland. While working for IBM I pursued a Masters in Data Analytics at Dublin City University on a part-time basis. I also started interacting with researchers at DCU such as my current advisor Prof Alan Smeaton and a Master’s lecturer Kevin Casey. The power and potential of applying Artificial Intelligence techniques to areas like Education captivated me and I decided to pursue a PhD in DCU with my advisor’s encouragement and backing.

Starting a Startup during the summer

In April 2015, my roommates and I participated in a Hackathon in Dublin City University. They were PhD students at the Adapt Centre and their work focused on Natural Langugage Processing for search and translation. At that time, I was a full-time Software Engineer at IBM and a part-time Master’s student in Data Analytics at the same university.
